As a part of my ongoing Navigating Global Challenges roundtable series, I had the privilege of moderating an insightful discussion on Equity Markets with Valerie Grant, CFA, managing director in Nuveen, a TIAA company’s active equity group and lead portfolio manager for the Nuveen Core Equity Fund. We covered the most pressing challenges shaping the equity markets today:

🌏 Market uncertainty related to geopolitical tensions, including China’s relationship with Taiwan;
🖥 Strategic importance of microchips as a catalyst for economic growth and priority for national security; and
🍃 The role of equity markets in addressing climate change and driving the global energy transition.

Valerie’s expertise and nuanced approach to investing shed light on how geopolitical issues, public policy and governance considerations can influence the financial performance of companies and long term investment performance.

I am grateful to Valerie, the NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs team and our wonderful student community including our Student Club for Global Economy (SAGE) for fostering such a candid and thought-provoking discussion. Events like this remind us of the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing the complexities of global markets.

These discussions are intimate, off-the-record conversations with leading experts representing the range of Global Business and Economy careers. Looking forward to continuing the conversation at NYU and beyond!
