It was such an honor to present at Harvard University Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) on ‘Fostering Meaningful Public Private Collaboration’ on Wednesday.

Some key points:
🌍 Large-scale consequences of a disaster make cooperation between the public and private sectors imperative to success in building resilient communities
🌊 Crises do not respect sectors, borders, differences
⛓️‍💥 Globalization has led to extraordinary advances and created a vast network of dependencies, greater risk profile for all stakeholders
📢 After a high-profile event, there is a short window of opportunity in which there is broad public support for change, which must be leveraged to promote preparedness
🤝 From international organizations down to communities, building partnerships for preparedness is essential
🏙️ What can crisis leaders do to foster and encourage public-private cooperation?

Tips for crisis leaders include:
💡 Be clear on your why — and understand the why of your partner(s) and respect it
🌉 Be a champion in building bridges, connect people
⛓️ Develop and deploy your translational leadership skills to bridge gaps in understanding
🦸‍♂️ Invest in and build relationships at multiple levels long before a crisis occurs
👨‍🏫 Multiply your impact and ensure continuity by training and involving future leaders

Lots of great discussion and information sharing with this distinguished group of seasoned crisis leaders. It was truly a pleasure to participate in this conversation and share with so many individuals charged with leading our communities through some of our darkest times.

Big thank you to Eric McNulty for the invitation as well as to Leonard Marcus and Kellie Bentz for your excellent stewardship of this important program.
